Ex Voto tiles
An ‘ex voto’ is a devotional object traditionally offered to a deity, saint, or spiritual figure as an expression of gratitude or fulfilment of a vow, often in thanks for an answered prayer or granted favor.
These offerings, which can take the form of paintings, plaques, sculptures, or other objects, are typically displayed in churches or shrines as symbols of faith, hope, and thanksgiving.
While deeply rooted in religious traditions, ex votos serve not only as acts of personal devotion but also as public testaments to divine intervention.
In creating ex votos, Roels draws from these religious traditions but reinterprets them through a modern, secular lens. With a deep appreciation for nature, Roels transforms the concept of devotion to reflect a reverence for the natural world, portraying it as a source of wonder and sanctuary.
The palm tree, a recurring motif in his work, symbolizes both his respect for nature and the idea of a “palm tree paradise”—a secular, earthly version of heaven.
Through his tiles, Roels presents nature itself as a sacred space, with the simplicity of his forms and earthy materials evoking humility, grounding, and an invitation to find paradise in the world around us.
Ex Voto is an open edition of glazed ceramic tiles.
All tiles are unique and the back of each tile is engraved with the initials B.V.R. and the year in Roman numerals.
